Black Crappie

Pomoxis nigromaculatus

Fast-action winter crappie (speck) fishing on Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee Chain. Great numbers, great eating, and perfect for families.

Crappie — Florida’s Beloved “Specks”

Around here we call them specks, and crappie fishing might be the most fun-per-dollar trip on the water. Black crappie are abundant, they bite in bunches, and they’re some of the best-eating fish that swim. On Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee Chain, a good winter day can fill a cooler and keep every rod in the boat bent — which makes specks the perfect target for families, beginners, and anyone who just wants steady action.

These are schooling fish, so when you find them, you really find them. Part of my job is locating the schools, dialing in the depth, and keeping you on biting fish.

When to Go

Crappie are a cool-season specialty. The bite is best from roughly November through March, when the fish school up and feed heavily, then move shallow to spawn as winter winds toward spring. The dead of winter into early spring is prime time, and it lines up perfectly for visitors escaping cold weather up north.

  • Late fall (Nov): Fish school up and the bite turns on.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Peak season — big schools, fast action.
  • Early spring (Mar): Fish push shallow to spawn around grass and brush; excellent numbers.

How We Catch Them

Specks aren’t complicated, but a few proven techniques put a lot of fish in the boat. Depending on conditions and where the schools are sitting, we’ll use:

  • Jigging small soft-plastic and marabou jigs around brush, grass edges, and open-water schools
  • Live minnows under floats or fished on jig heads — a deadly, easy presentation that’s great for kids
  • Spider-rigging multiple rods off the front of the boat to cover water and dial in the depth
  • Trolling jigs and minnows slowly through open water to locate scattered schools

I’ll have the rods rigged and ready and show you exactly how to fish them — these trips are about as beginner-friendly as it gets.

Perfect for Families & First-Timers

If you want to get kids hooked on fishing or you just want a relaxed day with lots of bites, crappie are the answer. The action is steady, the gear is light and easy, and you take home a delicious dinner. It’s the kind of trip that turns a first-timer into a lifelong angler.

Plan a Speck Trip

Crappie fishing peaks in the cooler months, so winter and early spring are the times to book. Reach out with your dates — half-day and full-day options are available — and let’s load the cooler with specks.
